RTA were commissioned to design and deliver the new Theatre building at Wildslodge School.

The site is located to the West of the existing school and as such is in a prominent position when viewed upon over the open countryside. In response to this, the design concept was to blend the building into the rolling country by using a curved sedum roof, this also allowed maximum height in the Theatre space in a very subtle and effective way. The building form is exciting and modern but uses traditional materials of stone and oak cladding to give a nod to the local vernacular.

The site is set on a slope which worked well with the curved roof. More traditional style buildings were designed to link the new Theatre element of the build to the existing stone outbuildings that the school previously used as storage. The juxtaposition of the buildings work well together and create a well thought out, useable internal layout which accommodates all the requirements that the school had set out in their brief, including Offices, a Kitchen, Staff Room, Counselling Areas and a spacious Lobby area for public use pre-perform.

The project took approximately two and a half years from the first meeting with the school regarding the design to handing over the keys on completion of the build.

The design has recently won the prestigious George Phillips Award 2018 which recognises the building that has made the most significant contribution to conserving the character of the built environment in Rutland of which we are very proud to have received.
